This handbuilt ceramic basket blends a rugged, tactile exterior with a surprising pop of color within. Its organic, slightly irregular form gives it a unique, one-of-a-kind presence that feels both ancient and modern.
The exterior features a deep, incised cross-hatch or "plaid" pattern carved into the clay. The dark, metallic glaze pools in these recesses, highlighting the rhythmic geometry of the design against the warmer, toasted clay body. A sophisticated dark bronze or "tenmoku" style glaze that breaks beautifully over the edges, revealing earthy brown undertones. The inside is finished with a stunning, crystalline cobalt blue glaze that pools at the bottom, creating a pool-like depth that contrasts sharply with the dark rim.
Two sturdy, hand-formed looped handles rise from the wavy rim, adding height and a functional, basket-like silhouette to the piece.
This decorative vase was made with white stoneware clay using handbuilding technique and was fired to 1,300 degrees centigrade. The glaze is food-safe. Handwash highly recommended with a mild detergent and a soft sponge.
